My final year undergraduate dissertation delved into the potential mispricing of a player's influence on set-piece play outcomes. It was this piece of work that kickstarted my passion for statistical analysis, and where I began learning how to uncover actionable insights for recruitment.
Key finding
Set-piece effectiveness simply showed no significant valuation amongst the sample of 486 transfers between 21/22 - 23/24 seasons in Europe's top 5 leagues.
Conversely, when measuring a players performance through an adjusted version of WhoScored's algorithmically generated ratings, the same set-piece effectiveness improved performance by 4.36%.
This significant influence on performance outcomes, when taking the average transfer fee from the sample, would represent approximately €800,000 of each fee. Thus, with no corresponding fee premium in the sample, it may represent an exploitable market pricing inefficiency.
